The Top Earning Women in Music
Lady Gaga, WireImage, JC Olivera
Alicia Keys gave birth to her first child in October 2010, but she barely skipped a beat in the year that followed. In 2011, the "Empire State of Mind" songstress co-directed a short film called Five, co-produced the Broadway debut of Stick Fly, grossed nearly $700,000 per night for a string of live concerts, and still was able to contribute time to Keep A Child Alive, the charity she co-founded.The Clickiest Viral Videos of 2011
"A lot of times, people make far more money than they could probably ever even think about what to do with," she told FORBES this fall. "If you have the opportunity to be able to encourage someone to do something great for somebody else … I think that's the right way to do business."
Keys did plenty of business last year—$10 million in earnings, by our estimates—placing her among the ten highest-earning women in music. Yet she finished far behind this year's Cash Queen.
That title belongs to Lady Gaga, who led the pack with a staggering $90 million total boosted by strong album sales, endorsements and an extremely lucrative world tour. Gaga's total was more than the combined earnings of No. 2 Taylor Swift ($45 million) and No. 3 Katy Perry ($44 million), both of whom also benefited from heavy touring and popular albums.
Yahoo! 2011 Year In Review
The earnings estimates were compiled with the help of data from Pollstar, RIAA and others, as well as extensive interviews with industry insiders including lawyers, managers, concert promoters, agents and, in some cases, the musicians themselves. The totals encompass all pretax income earned from May 2010 to May 2011, before subtracting agent and manager fees.
Among the top ten earners, there were both newcomers and veterans. Soul sensation Adele pulled in $18 million—a number that only captures a few months of sales for her breakout album 21, making her a likely candidate to return to the top ten next year. Celine Dion may not be quite as popular as her British counterpart, but she banked $19 million on the strength of a wildly popular run in Las Vegas, where her nightly gross ticket sales exceeded $2.3 million.
Yet there remains something of a pay gap in music's upper echelon. Just five of the women on this list were among the overall 25 highest paid musicians, a list that included 13 male solo acts and 7 bands (only one of those acts, The Black Eyed Peas, had a female member). The time demands of motherhood are commonly listed as a reason for the inequality, but according to entertainment attorney Lori Landew, there's more to it than that.
Taylor Swift, Getty Images Entertainment, Royce DeGrie"Women artists seem to be less likely to diversify their holdings and to build multi-tier enterprises to take advantage of their success and celebrity," she says. "What remains unclear, however, is whether this is because these women have less of an entrepreneurial spirit than their male counterparts, which I doubt, or whether they are simply presented with fewer opportunities."
Rest In Peace -- 2011 -- A Year In Obituaries
Landew believes that male artists are approached more for such ventures, as well as movie roles and lucrative endorsement deals. The latter two options, she adds, become even more unattainable to female stars as they age, especially compared to men.
Still, bright spots abound.
"There are several notable exceptions," she says. "One need only look at Oprah or Madonna to know that it doesn't take a Y chromosome to be a successful entertainment visionary or entrepreneur."
Another terrific example: The aforementioned Keys, who out-earned entrepreneurial super-producer husband Swizz Beatz by $3.5 million last year.
Miley Cyrus: I Didn't Get a Boob Job!
Miley Cyrus is a natural woman, y'all!
The 19-year-old singer-actress showed off some extreme cleavage Sunday at the CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute in Los Angeles. Wearing a plunging Robert Cavalli yellow dress, her buxom look led many to believe she'd had a boob job, but Cyrus says that's not the case.

"Thank you for the compliment, but these babies are all mine," the former Disney star tweeted. "I wish [people would] realize you don't have to be fake to be beautiful!"

PHOTOS: Which celebs went under the knife in 2011?
Although Cyrus didn't enhance her assets through surgery in 2011, several other stars -- including LeAnn Rimes, Nicole Richie and Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham -- opted to go under the knife.

Peace out, bright pink hair!
Katy Perry is celebrating the wrap of her eight month-long California Dreams tour with a fresh, new makeover.

At the Change Begins Within Benefit Celebration in Los Angeles Saturday, the singer debuted a dramatically short new haircut and a baby pink color that looks much lighter than the bubblegum hue she sported at the 2011 American Music Awards November 21.

VOTE: Who has the better hair in Hollywood?
Just this year, Perry, 27, has underwent several hair color changes. In June, the brunette beauty dyed her hair a fiery red, which was a result of a botched dye job. Weeks later, she traded auburn for blonde and in August, debuted a punk-rock "lavender" color.

Britney Spears’ Top 10 Wildest Looks
Can you believe it? Britney Spears turns 30 years old December 2! And what better way to celebrate the all-grown-up pop icon's big birthday than to look back at some of her wildest ensembles? From bare midriffs to barely-there lingerie, Britney has rocked some of the most memorable looks in pop music during her decades-spanning career.
Sure, there's some (okay, a lot) of poking fun going on here, but I genuinely love my Brit Brit. Femme Fatale is in all honesty one of my favorite albums of the year, and this is coming from an underground music devotee. In fact, over 14,000 photos of Britney were thoroughly sifted through by yours truly to find Britney's craziest, most iconic outfits. And so, without further ado, here are her top 10 fashion moments!
Luis Martinez/Online USA, Inc.
10. I distinctly remember watching a show that followed Britney Spears while she had a fitting for the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. Her sheer, sequined cardigan with a furry collar was meant to be worn over a dress, but the young pop singer insisted she wear just the outer part. The top had to be altered to barely keep Britney's chest covered...and here you see the iffy result!

9. She may have been wearing little, but there was so much going on with Britney's red-carpet arrival outfit for the 2002 VMAs. The leather halter minidress with a high lace slit, matched with unfortunate lace-up heels, was already enough. But to add the crocheted arm warmers and biker/military/dominatrix hat was just too much for me. But then again, maybe I forget what was considered hot in 2002.

8. Getting back to her old form, Britney surprised the 2011 BillBoard Music Awards audience when she accompanied Rihanna for her performance of "S&M," with the two pop divas wearing matching bondage suits and handcuffs. The rabbit mask put Britney's outfit over the top, making her look less like a Playboy Bunny, and more like a scary Donnie Darko rabbit. The awkward pillow fight at the end of the performance didn't help, either.

7. Paris Hilton made it a "thing" to carry her tiny chihuahua everywhere she went, including photo shoots and red carpets. Britney Spears jumped on that bandwagon briefly, awkwardly carrying an even tinier pup with her as a red-carpet accessory at the 2004 Billboard Music Awards. Paired with the ultimate oddball accessory, then-husband Kevin Federline, Britney's strange company upstaged an otherwise cute look.

6. Who can forget Britney's "Like A Virgin" moment? Madonna made the sexy wedding dress an iconic moment when she rolled around suggestively onstage in it at the very first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984; Britney and Christina Aguilera revamped the look when they performed with Madonna at the 2003 VMAs. Male fantasies all over the world came true when the Britney-Madonna kiss happened during the controversial performance...but no one seems to remember that Madonna and Xtina kissed, too!
5. Britney Spears had a few rough years in her twenties, with her divorce from Kevin Federline, the proceeding child custody battles, rehab, and that head-shaving incident (not to mention the umbrella incident). Her performance at the 2007 MTV VMAs was supposed to mark her triumphant return, but instead her slovenly demeanor and incredibly unfortunate wardrobe choice only added to her mountains of bad press. She apparently was encouraged to wear a sequined corset to hide what used to be her signature killer torso, but in the end she refused, opting for a more revealing bra-and-panty set...and more flesh than the audience was prepared for.
4. The uproar over this outfit seems silly nowadays, but for the then-squeaky-clean 18-year-old teen queen, her nude-tone bodysuit, made to look like she was wearing nothing but rhinestones and a thong, created a massive scandal. The singer opened with a short cover of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," then moved on to her huge single "Oops! I Did It Again." The innuendo of both songs was a bit too much for some parents to handle, but it marked the start of Britney's foray into becoming a grown-up pop diva.
3. I can't express how much I love Getty Images. This 11-year-old neon orange gem could've slipped under the radar, but I still dug it up! Part pimp, part musketeer, all hot mess, Britney Spears was a two-time winner at the 2000 Billboard Music Awards, but her outfit was a huge loss.
2. Justin Timberlake must be one of the most tolerant boyfriends ever for going along with this matching-denim disaster at the 2001 American Music Awards. If Britney wore her long denim dress alone, it would've been a minor red carpet miss...but the two together makes any onlooker ask, WHY?
1. This look made the top spot because it fulfilled all requirements for a wild outfit: it was skin-baring, sexy, sparkly, very daringly accessorized, and heck, girl looked drop-dead gorgeous! Britney Spears has had more fashion misses than most celebrities would feel comfortable with, but her harem outfit from the 2003 VMAs was so on-pop-point that famed wax museum Madame Tussauds immortalized the look with an extremely creepy wax figure. Forever frozen on a pole? I guess there could be worst shrines to Britney Spears.
AP: McCready Says Can’t Return To Fla For Court,Pic`s
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Country singer Mindy McCready is in Nashville and says she will probably not be able to bring her 5-year-old son back to Florida to fulfill a judge's order — because she is nearly 7 months pregnant with twins.
Speaking exclusively to The Associated Press, McCready said Wednesday that she and her mother have had a long custody battle over Zander. Her mother was awarded guardianship of the boy in 2007.
Florida Department of Children and Families said a missing person report was filed with police Tuesday night after McCready took Zander from her father's home.
On Tuesday, DCF discovered that McCready and the boy were not at her father's home and a judge ruled she must return the boy voluntarily by 5 p.m. Thursday or risk an arrest warrant.
